Achieving healthier smiles with great periodontal care near Dallas, TX
Having a healthy smile involves caring for both your teeth and gums. Your soft gum tissue is responsible for keeping your teeth in place and keeps the tooth root protected. Gum disease can occur even in patients who practice diligent oral hygiene, so it’s important to maintain regular preventative exams and cleanings so that your dentist can monitor the health of your gums. At Perfect 32 Family Dentistry, we offer complete periodontal care for gum disease to patients in the Dallas, TX area.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is a condition that has several different stages. At its core, it’s an infection and inflammation of the gum tissue. Early stage gum disease is something that many people have heard of: gingivitis. The symptoms of gingivitis include tender, swollen, red gums, bleeding while brushing, gum tissue beginning to separate from the teeth, and chronic bad breath that does not improve with brushing or mouthwash. When gingivitis goes untreated, it will turn into the more advanced periodontitis. During the advanced stages, the gum tissue will continue to pull further away from the teeth, leaving pockets where bacteria accumulate. Over time, teeth may begin to loosen and shift out of place. Patients with advanced periodontal disease may experience tooth or bone loss.

How we treat gum disease
Once we identify the presence of gum disease, either during a routine examination or because you’ve noticed symptoms, we must begin treatment properly to prevent the disease from spreading more. When caught early enough, the symptoms of gum disease can often be reversed. For individuals with gingivitis, we will perform a thorough cleaning to remove any deep plaque and tartar buildup that is causing the gum disease. An antibiotic will be used to treat any infection. If the gum disease has reached very advanced stages, treatment may involve extractions, gum surgery, bone grafting, and dental implants for restoration of any missing teeth. Regardless of what stage the gum disease is in, it’s important to begin the treatment process as soon as possible.
Preventing gum disease
At Perfect 32 Family Dentistry, we partner with you to improve oral health and prevent gum disease through routine preventative care, dental cleanings, thorough gum evaluation, and soft tissue care. Incorporating these items into your daily oral hygiene routine can help prevent the emergence of gum disease:
- Brush your teeth. Brushing your teeth at least twice each day is the minimum you can do to remove food debris and plaque. We also recommend that you brush after every meal.
- Floss. You should be flossing every day to remove particles that become trapped between teeth.
- Use mouthwash. Antibacterial mouthwash can help keep the teeth clean and is good for situations when you are unable to brush.
- Know your risk. If you are older, smoke or use tobacco, have a family history of gum disease, or have certain health conditions, you are at an increased risk of developing gum disease and should be monitored closely.
Together we can improve your oral health so that your smile is healthy and beautiful for many, many years. If you are in Dallas, TX or the surrounding areas, please call us today at (469) 804-5677.
