Garland, TX dentist designs beautiful dental crowns

Dental Crowns from dentist in Garland The top part of a tooth, visible above the gum line, is the crown. A sturdy restoration that covers that portion of a tooth is also called a crown. Dr. Sakunthala Boppana restores and beautifies smiles with dental crowns, at Perfect 32 Family Dentistry in Garland, TX.

Tooth crowns as restorative dentistry

Dr. Boppana may recommend dental caps in these situations:
  • Support a large filling, repairing an extensive cavity.
  • Hold together and protect a broken or badly fractured tooth.
  • Restore shape and function of a tooth that is worn down.
  • Provide strength to a tooth that has had root canal therapy.
  • Secure a fixed dental bridge in place.
  • Finish a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.

Crowns are not just for adults. Primary teeth play an important role in the development and alignment of secondary teeth. An economical stainless steel dental crown can avoid the need for extraction of a baby tooth that is compromised by decay or trauma.

Cosmetic crowns

The dental crown technique also has cosmetic applications. A crown improves the appearance of a tooth that is severely discolored, has an odd shape or size, or has unattractive enamel contours.

Dental crown procedure

Dental crowns can be made of metal or porcelain fused to metal. Today, however, most patients prefer the aesthetic appeal of all porcelain crowns. This lustrous dental ceramic mimics the translucency of natural enamel. Plus, it is strong and resists stains. Regardless of the material used, the procedure generally takes just two appointments.

At the first visit, the tooth is prepped. Dr. Boppana removes damaged structure and shapes the tooth so that a crown can fit on top. (In some cases, this involves building the tooth up with composite resin bonding.) Impressions are taken, and the tooth is protected with a temporary composite crown.

Impressions and information on shading go to a professional dental laboratory, where the porcelain crown is made. You return to Perfect 32 in about two weeks. The interim crown is removed, and the new crown is cemented securely in place.
