Dental inlays and onlays: Conservative dentistry in Garland, TX

Dental inlays and onlays from dentist in Garland Most people are familiar with the dental terms “filling” and “crown.” There is a lesser-known yet highly-beneficial restoration technique that lies between the two. Dr. Sakunthala Boppana offers dental inlays and onlays as a conservative option for her patients in the Garland, TX area.

Fillings, inlays, onlays, or crowns?

A filling is a restorative material placed into or bonded onto the hole in a tooth left by a cavity. It is called a direct restoration, because the filling is made and placed while you are in the chair. A dental crown is a cap that encloses the visible portion of a prepared tooth. This is normally done as an indirect restoration, with the crown fabricated at an off-site lab.

An inlay or onlay has characteristics of each, and some unique benefits. This is an indirect restoration, made at a lab, like a dental crown. Yet, more like a filling, minimal healthy tooth structure has to be removed for placement of an inlay or onlay. Thus, the area of decay is repaired, while conserving tooth structure.

Inlays and onlays are similar. The distinction lies in the portion of tooth the restoration covers. An onlay covers the whole chewing surface of a tooth, including at least one cusp. An inlay is smaller, fitting within the cusps.

The procedure

  • Only local anesthetic is needed.
  • Once you are thoroughly numbed, old filling removal is performed, if necessary. This is in cases where decay has developed underneath, or the filling is cracked or damaged.
  • Using a high-speed drill, Dr. Boppana removes all traces of decay.
  • An impression of this portion of the mouth is taken.
  • The cavity is sanitized and sealed with a composite resin material.
  • The impression goes to the dental lab, where your restoration is fabricated from gold or tooth-colored porcelain.
  • You return in a few weeks to have the temporary removed.
  • The fit of the inlay or onlay is carefully checked. Then it is permanently bonded to the tooth.
