Getting Up And Turning In
You produce less saliva during rest, which allows odor-causing bacteria to flourish. They coat all surfaces in your mouth, including orthodontic appliances. Follow these steps to clean your mouth and aligners properly, so bacteria won’t cause bad breath all day and contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.
- Remove aligners and place on a clean towel.
- Moisten one aligner with tepid (not hot) water.
- Brush gently with clear (not tinted) antibacterial hand soap and a soft toothbrush reserved for aligners.
- Rinse thoroughly, place on towel, and repeat with the other aligner.
- Brush your teeth and tongue.
- Insert aligners.
The process is the same at bedtime, except be sure to floss your teeth before brushing.
About once a week, give aligners a sanitizing soak in denture cleanser or Invisalign’s proprietary product.
Through The Day
Eating or drinking anything but plain water with aligners in place may stain or damage them. In addition, it traps food debris next to teeth. Please remove aligners before consuming food or beverages. Rinse aligners with clean, cool water and place them in their storage case. If you wrap aligners in a tissue or napkin, they may accidentally go in the trash! After eating, brush your teeth, or swish with plain water if brushing is not an option. Insert aligners immediately.
